You know that incredible feeling you get from drinking a kale loaded smoothie or eating a superfood salad lunch? Well, this Superfood skincare starter kit from Rooki Beauty will give you that same auh-mazing feeling!

The concept of superfoods has been around for some time now with many healthy gurus recommending incorporating certain types of nutrient-rich foods into your diet in order to maintain good long term health. Not exactly revolutionary new advice but still very good advice nonetheless.

More recently, the idea has started to find its way into other aspects of our lives including skincare and being a skincare junkie myself, I decided to jump on the bandwagon to find out what the buzz was behind superfood skincare. This is when I came across home-grown clean skincare brand Rooki Beauty.

So Why Superfood Skincare?

The “superfood” posse has been around for some time now and there is tons of content online propounding various foods, often costly, as being the “next superfood”. Many of these articles often turn out to be misleading click-bait and no wonder as there isn’t a single definition we can all agree on for what a “superfood” actually is.

Generally though, superfoods are foods with a very high nutritional density that provides an outsized nutritional benefit vis-a-vis the amount of food and calories that you need to consume. They often contain high levels of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that have a range of benefits from keeping your body functioning at optimal levels to being anti-cancerous, improving your eyesight or even making your skin glow!

While we may not agree on what a superfood actually is, the idea of using high nutrient density ingredients in your skincare products totally makes sense to me and is what inspired Hayley Teo to create her own unique line of superfood inspired skincare products. We recently picked up a starter kit from Rooki Beauty and yes, we were impressed.

The Superfood Basic Kit

The basic kit that Ireceived consisted of the Honey Matcha Cleansing Drops, a wash-off mask, the Green Pulp Paste Masque and the Superfood Saviour Creme, a moisturising cream that promises to help you achieve soft, hydrated and truly glowing skin. Not only are these products infused with superfood extracts, they are also paraben-free, silicone-free, sulfate-free, PEG-free and fragrance-free! Read on for the details.

Honey Matcha Cleansing Drops, $59.00

rooki beauty honey matcha cleansing drops

I love how light the bottle is and the simplicity of the packaging with a pop of colour from the orange block on the front of the bottle. Although the packaging is quite minimalist, don’t let that fool you, the ingredients inside pack a punch! It is formulated with not just one but three superfoods Honey, Matcha Powder and Chia Seeds.

Upon opening the bottle, I was graced with a pleasant scent similar to sour candies, which I adore as it smells refreshing and fruity! This cleanser has a gel-like texture that foams up generously when mixed with water! Half a pump of the light pink watery gel was just the right amount for my entire face, so a little goes a long way with this cleanser!

This dual-action pH balanced Honey Matcha Cleansing Drops preps your skin by first removing dirt and impurities and then replenishes it with drops of nourishing Honey, known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Organic Uji Matcha which is rich in fibre, chlorophyll and antioxidants help reduce blemishes and soothes skin redness and omega-rich Chia Seeds help restore balance to your skin.

This award winning cleanser is further fortified with a Vitamin C derivative that activates on contact with water and contains smoothening Lactic Acid that can help to brighten and recharge tired looking skin.

At $59 for a 120ml bottle, it is a little on the expensive side though by no means the priciest cleanser that I have ever tried. Despite its relatively steep price, if you have the moolah to shell out, you might find this cleanser very much worth the money as it is quite dense and a little bit goes a long way - a single bottle lasted me nearly 3 months of normal use.

Green Pulp Paste Masque, $64.00

Next up was the plant infused gel-to-paste antioxidant glow masque, the Green Pulp Paste Masque! I was pretty excited to try it as everyone seemed to be raving about it. This mask is infused with a literal garden of superfoods including Carrots, Tomatoes, Matcha, Kale and Soybeans. Rich in antioxidants

When it comes to masking, I have a confession to make and I’m pretty sure I am not alone in this - but can be a little too impatient to sit around with a mask on my face and wait for a whole 15 minutes while my skin absorbs the much needed nutrients. I’ve also had some bad experiences in the past where my skin got irritated after masking and so generally stay away from masking regularly or changing the brand of masks that I am comfortable with. Nevertheless, I was most intrigued by the sauna-like sensation described by others who had tried this mask and was looking forward to it.

First off, this mask comes in a tube which makes masking so much more convenient and cleaner. While there is a general perception of brand prestige when creams come in jars rather than tubes, tubes are actually a lot more hygienic as you do not dip your fingers into it. This is especially true if you don’t have the habit of using a spatula or if you rotate your products and usually take a while to finish one.

I also like tubes because I always find it a little easier to get just the exact amount that I want out of it though it get get a little troublesome as you get to the end of the tube. When I first squeezed the gel, I was expecting a heavy “green and organic” smell, but surprisingly the scent was very subtle! Considering the amount of superfood included in the gel, it was a pleasant surprise!

The texture of the Green Pulp Paste Masque is jelly-like, watery-substance with a greenish hue that for some reason, reminded me of Slimer from The Ghost Busters movie. The green “slime” quickly transformed into a white pasty lather akin to a cleanser on dry skin.

Leaving the paste on for about 15 minutes, I began to feel a warming sensation gradually building up over my skin. It started out at normal room temperature and gradually became warmer, which gave my skin a nice relaxing  and comforting feel. According to Rooki Beauty, this warming effect is part of the skin healing and activation process that should leave my skin with a spa-like glow after.

After using the mask religiously thrice a week, I found that my complexion had indeed brightened up visibly but where I saw the most noticeable improvement was with my pores! My enlarged pores around my T-zone made my skin look uneven and rough and used to be my biggest skin concern but after 2 weeks of use, I found my T-zone looked smoother and my skin felt more balanced (I have combination skin with an oily T-zone).

Superfood Saviour Creme, $79.00

rooki beauty superfood saviour creme

Looking at this moisutirisng cream, the first thought that popped to mind was “pretty in pink”! The Superfood Saviour Creme looks so cute due to its small palm-sized tub and a pink bubblegum block across it. Even though the size is relatively smaller than what I’m used to, it’s pretty heavy, giving it a substantial feel.

Formulated with three types of superfoods, Kale, Lingonberries and Chia Seeds, it also has a 3-in-1 Moisturising System that is made up  of Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane and an enzyme CoQ10 that helps prevent signs of ageing and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid is a powerful humectant - it attracts moisture to itself - and a well known beauty ingredient reknowned for its ability to hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. Squalane is another moisturising ingredient that is noncomedogenic - it does not clog pores -  and has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties.

When I first uncapped the cute tub, the scent of lingonberries hit my nose, followed by the satisfying visuals of milky baby pink cream! Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of the scent and as I found it pretty strong but my roommate who tried this cream out with me thought it smelled like bubblegum and loved it!

The moisturiser is on the richer side and felt a little tacky after the initial application but  felt much more comfortable after a few minutes as it got absorbed. In our humid weather, the comfort of how my moisturising cream wears is pretty important as it can get uncomfortable unless you have the air conditioner on. This wasn’t the best but it was far from the worst I’ve tested.

In any case, I used this as an overnight moisturiser and a heavier moisturiser is always recommended to protect your skin from moisture loss as you get your beauty “Z”s. My skin felt plump and thoroughly moisturised the next morning and it worked pretty well as a night cream. The only improvement I would like to see is maybe providing a spatula  as I got it under my nail extensions but otherwise, a really good moisturiser!

Final Words

I love this superfood brand and what it does for my skin! I would highly recommend the Honey Matcha Cleansing Drops and the Green Pulp Paste Masque and they have found their place in my regular rotation of skincare products that I use. As for the Superfood Saviour Creme, although the results from using it were very rewarding, the scent was just not for me.

Special mention has to go to the Green Pulp Paste Masque. If there is one product here that you should try, it’s this one. I found that the tube and the texture made it easy to use and the warming sensation felt strangely comforting. More importantly, I was impressed with its ability in tightening my pores and smoothening my complexion.

Overall, I really liked the line, its cute packaging and unique concept. It’s a bit on the pricier side but by no means expensive in the world of over-marketd and over-priced luxury skincare brands. With Rooki Beauty, I felt that I got what I paid for afterall, you can’t put a price on a good skin-vestment!
